That sensible haircut won’t get you noticed at rock shows, and it certainly won’t earn you a backstage pass when Mötley Crüe plays Jones Beach on Tue 8. Lucky for you, we’ve enlisted the help of Janaan (one name, like Madonna), rock & roll stylist at Noho’s goth-punk-rockabilly-alterna-whatever salon Mudhoney.
Step 1: Flip it and reverse it
The first step to cultivating a radically ’80s-rocker ’do involves blasting your hair with as much hairspray as you can stand to inhale. “Flip your hair upside down,” says Janaan. “Then set it with your favorite strong-hold hairspray.”
Step 2: Pump it up
If you now look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge, you’re on the way to rockerville. It’s time to add shape to those lacquered tresses. “Pin the sides up tight, as if you were creating a Mohawk,” advises Janaan. “Think Nikki Sixx’s ‘no-hawk’—more big hair!”
Step 3: Rock tease
The only way to make that mess on your head better is by messing it up more. “Tease the roots to achieve height and use molding paste to chunk it out,” says Janaan. A fine-tooth comb helps.
Step 4: Look intimidating
The final result should be a sexy updo. “Sweep one side of the bang area over your forehead, put on your best sneer, and get ready to headbang!” says Janaan. “And don’t forget the black eyeliner—that’s a must!”
