There are still four days left in the New York Asian Film Festival. Reigning champ Walkow recommends the following flicks featuring yakuza characters:
Sasori Dir. Joe Ma“This is a Hong Kong remake of the famous exploitation series Female Convict Scorpion,” says Walkow. “It turns it up to 11 in the trash department: women-in-prison mud wrestling, revenge killings, torture—it’s sleaze-a-licious!” IFC Center, Thu 3 at 11:55pm.
Adrift in Tokyo Dir. Satoshi Miki“Adrift is an observational comedy about a debt collector. It lampoons the traditional yakuza character, while also making him a real, three-dimensional person.” Japan Society, 333 E 47th St between First and Second Aves (212-715-1258). Thu 3 at 4:20pm.
Accuracy of Death Dir. Masaya Kakei“Taiwanese-Japanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro plays a death god who visits three mortals, including a chinpira—a low-level gangster (it literally means ‘little dick’)—who’s struggling with the decision to betray his yakuza elder. The plot strays pretty far from the path of yakuza movies, but the third episode costars Sumiko Fuji, who was the queen of traditional yakuza cinema in the 1960s.” Japan Society. Thu 3 at 8:45pm, Fri 4 at 12:15pm.
