    3 questions for…Rue McClanahan

    Memoirist, Golden Girl

    Photo: Jean-Marc Vlaminck

    1. You’ve just written a book called My First Five Husbands…And the Ones Who Got Away. Does your current marriage work because of the wisdom you’ve gained from the previous five?

Absolutely. I found the right person because I had become savvier in knowing what to look for and what type of person would be the marrying kind, instead of just going by other reasons that aren’t as good. Need is never a good reason to get married. Good looks and sex appeal aren’t either.

    2. How is your approach to courtship similar to that of Blanche Devereaux?

Oh, it’s not similar at all. Blanche was desperately trying to find someone to replace her beloved husband who had died. She was really just man-crazy and had boyfriend after boyfriend, and never found a soul mate. Blanche had a wonderful spirit and was very optimistic, but she didn’t have very good judgment.

    3. I hear you have an upcoming gig at Chelsea nightspot Barracuda.

It’s a question-and-answer evening, and then a signing. I expect a wonderful reception, because the gay crowd very much likes Blanche. I used to wonder why, and then one night, I asked a young man down in the Village. I said, “What is it that makes you guys love Blanche so much?” And he said, “Well, I thought you knew—we all want to be her.”—Erin Clements

Rue McClanahan will appear at Barracuda on Apr 19 at 9:30pm.

I write for the Hampton Union. I would like to do an article about you in the Hampton Playhouse. Can you give me any of your recollections about your experience in southern New Hampshire? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I appreciate how busy you must be. My phone number is 603-601-2231. Thanks ever so much. Mike Bisceglia
