From Fri 9 to Sun 11, home-furnishings fanatics can go right to the source at Bklyn Designs in Dumbo, where 68 local firms will show the latest in furnishings and housewares. We got our favorite Brooklyn-based design bloggers, Grace Bonney (designspongeonline.com) and Jill Fehrenbacher (inhabitat.com), to give us the lowdown on their top designers.
Brave Space

“They always turn out smart, funny and eco-friendly design, like bamboo Tetris shelves that interlock in different ways,” says Fehrenbacher. “They did a coatrack made of broken bits of wood that looked like a mountain range.”
Palo Samko

“I love how he hides tiny details,” beams Bonney of this eco-conscious woodworker. “Like a big desk with a long, thin cylindrical pencil holder in it. You might never notice it unless you push this one part.”
Scrapile

Fehrenbacher says using scraps from piano factories allows Greenpointers Bart Bettencourt and Carlos Salgado to give their furniture “a wonderful patchwork quality.”
Uhuru

Both our bloggers love this Red Hook company. Fehrenbacher favored its thick scrap-wood stools (called stoolen), but Bonney’s just impressed with the overall craftsmanship. “It’s not enough to be environmental. Uhuru uses sustainable materials in innovative ways—even if they weren’t environmentally friendly, they’d still be incredible pieces.”
