When local tech coach Trish craves a cup o’ joe, she heads straight to indie hangout Munch Café & Grill (71-50 Yellowstone Blvd at Dartmouth St, Forest Hills, Queens; 718-544-0075, munchcafeandgrill.com). Its free Wi-Fi, red-and-yellow color scheme and comfy seating are certainly welcoming, and the java—tasty custom blends sourced from Indonesia, Africa and Central America—have earned a superlative rep. “I take my coffee black,” Trish notes. “And theirs always has a nice, fresh richness. It’s worth the hype.”
Trish also has an appetitee for pastry, and Martha’s Country Bakery (70-30 Austin Street at 70th Rd; 718-544-0088, marthascountrybakery.com) gives Manhattan’s Crumbs and Magnolia a run for their cupcakes, with more than two dozen varieties at two bucks a pop. Look for decadent delights such as the Roman Candle (a tubular chocolate shell containing mousse, Bavarian cream and strawberry filling). “The red velvet and vanilla-vanilla cupcakes are really popular,” says George, Martha’s owner.
To work off the fruits of his labor, George recommends the West Side Tennis Club (1 Tennis Pl at Dartmouth St; 718-268-2300, foresthillstennis.com), a 14-acre complex of 38 courts that played host to the U.S. Open championships from 1915 until 1977. Its Junior Olympic pool and tennis summer camp for adults ($115 per day for nonmembers) are perfect for summertime swims and swings. Shopping’s your preferred sport? The multilevel Soleil (71-43 Austin St at 71st Rd, 718-520-8419) carries specially commissioned imported furniture and housewares, including a glittery Indonesian Buddha, Rajah Rosewood tables and fragrant organic French soap.
