There may not be a new recording to promote, but Daft Punk’s first area appearance in a decade couldn’t come at a better moment. Fifteen months after Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter wowed audiences with their LED-plated robot helmets at a now-legendary Coachella performance, hype remains at fever pitch.
Part of the credit belongs to the recent emergence of the Daft-indebted Parisian electrohouse sound, put forward by acts (Justice, SebastiAn) on Ed Banger, the label run by DP’s manager. Hip-hop, however, has also been paying attention: Taking a cue from Swizz Beatz, who sampled “Technologic” on Busta Rhymes’s banger “Touch It,” Kanye West raided “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” for his latest single, “Stronger.”
De Homem-Christo and Bangalter view their union as more of a multimedia project than a recording duo, a notion reinforced by their recent film, Electroma. (Midnight screenings of the wordless flick are scheduled at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema on Aug 17 and 18.) Fittingly, their current tour features one of the more extravagant visual feasts in recent live-music memory: Atop a giant LED pyramid, two robot-men (who may or may not be De Homem-Christo and Bangalter—the ones in Electroma aren’t) appear to command both the music and an elaborately choreographed light show.
By nature, electronic music is more enveloping in a club setting then in an outdoor stadium. But as a quick trip to YouTube will tell you, any visit from Daft Punk—especially one against the surreal backdrop of Coney Island—will surely defy that logic.
