The Heart of the City tour, which rolls through the burbs this week before concluding at MSG in May, presents an interesting question: Who’s the headliner? Jay-Z may seem like the bigger draw, but Mary J. Blige’s Growing Pains has outsold his American Gangster (released in December and November, respectively), and Mary’s current “Just Fine” has proven more ubiquitous than any single Jay’s mustered postretirement.
Regardless of who’s closing each night, the shows will peak with “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” the MJB-aided third single from Jay’s Reasonable Doubt. While hardly among his biggest chart successes, the silky-smooth ’96 mantra set the tone for the Jigga Man’s future by fusing the rough-hewn street rap he’d already become known for with one of those female-friendly choruses he’d soon become even better known for. You could say he owes it all to Mary.
