Bon Jovi, the Breeders and Sonny Rollins will never walk into a bar together

Clinic damned itself with its early albums, establishing such a brazenly distinct sound that its subsequent work can seem like mere retreads. Do It!, the Liverpool band’s fifth LP, hardly disposes of its formula: Abe Blackburn’s detached and strangely soulful singing remains glued to wild, postsurf guitars and anxious drones. Yet this is a smart, well-detailed record. The puzzle inherent to Clinic, whose members hide behind lab masks onstage, gets embellished by the strange detours and determined inscrutability of the songs.
Clinic plays Music Hall of Williamsburg May 8, 2008, and Bowery Ballroom May 31, 2008.
