Those still lamenting Kelly Clarkson’s decision to indulge her inner rock chick on My December should rejoice in the return of the Veronicas. Clarkson and this twins-fronted Australian band had nearly identical Max Martin–penned hits—“Since U Been Gone” and “4ever,” respectively. But whereas the former subsequently ditched the pop formula, the latter’s Jess and Lisa Origliasso amped it with an electro makeover on their fab second album, Hook Me Up.
Issued overseas in 2007, the CD was released to iTunes here last month with little promotion. Hopefully the Veronicas’ current tour, their first stateside outing in two years, will bring them some attention—their short career has already produced more irresistible, hormonally charged rave-ups and pogo-inducing moments than many longtime pop acts’ greatest-hits collections. Clarkson needn’t rush her return to pop; the Veronicas have more than compensated since she’s been gone.
