JFK International Airport is one of the largest human-trafficking hubs in the nation. Each year, thousands of children pass through its gates, winding up as cheap laborers or victims of sexual exploitation. “We assume it doesn’t happen here and that’s a problem,” says Max Mayer, administrator of End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes (ecpatusa.org). So do something!
Level 1: I care a little.
Sign up for newsletters. The National Organization for Women offers e-mail alerts and a Trafficking Action Network (nownyc.org).
Level 2: I care a lot.
“The average person is oblivious to signs of trafficking,” says Mayer, who encourages people to attend workshops and training sessions. Girls Education & Mentoring Services offers a great one (gems-girls.org).
Level 3: I’m a freakin’ saint.
“The cause needs visibility and government funding,” says Mayer, adding that do-gooders can write letters to the Senate requesting support for the Anti-Human Trafficking Law. “There’s protection for victims but no one can receive free housing and counseling unless they agree to help with the prosecution of their pimps.” And you can imagine the threat that carries.
