Time Out New York / Oct 7, 2008

    New restaurant openings

Beat the crowds to these noteworthy new eateries.

Naya Mezze & Grill Naya means “new” in Arabic, and this Middle Eastern restaurant is going for a modern look—white walls and backlit Phoenician hieroglyphics—with an accessible menu. Watch out for hummus and chicken shawarma, plus wines and beers from Lebanon. 1057 Second Ave between 55th and 56th Sts (212-319-7777)

Bistrouge First-time restaurateur Eda Kilic made a well-timed departure from banking to open this Pan-European bistro. As the name indicates, the space is doused in the color red. The menu—dishes include meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce—was created by consulting chef Diego Gonzales (Allioli). 432 E 13th St between First Ave and Ave A (212-677-2200)

Kambi Ramen House The noodle takeover of the East Village continues with a second ramen joint from Shigeto Kamada (Minca). The design firm responsible for Ippudo handled the new look, but the mostly ramen menu will be familiar to Minca fans. Expect sake and beer once the liquor license clears. 351 E 14th St between First and Second Aves (212-228-1366)

Lugo Caffè From the team behind Lugo, a menswear boutique, comes this 150-seat Italian café. Bold green-and-yellow tabletops and subway-tiled walls constitute an urban backdrop for multiregional classics, like caponata and fritto misto, and an all-Italian wine list. 1 Penn Plaza, 33rd St at Eighth Ave (212-760-2700)

Pinche Taqueria The second New York location of this Tijuana minichain offers its celebrated al pastor tacos plus other standbys, like a mahi-mahi variety with cilantro mayo. Eat them in the colorful café or snag some from a to-go window. 333 Lafayette St between Bleecker and E Houston Sts (212-343-9977)

Secession David Bouley, with consulting chef Cesare Casella, has reopened the former Danube space as a casual French-Italian brasserie. The far-ranging menu includes classics such as steak frites, and naturally, pasta. 30 Hudson St at Duane St (212-791-3771)

Sonia Rose The previous location of Sonia Rose (on 34th Street) closed shortly after September 11, 2001. The French white-tablecloth eatery has finally been resurrected, on the LES. Expect dishes like salmon en papillote, and live music. 74 Orchard St at Grand St (212-260-5317)

TOM: Tuesday Dinner After perhaps too many hours in front of the camera, Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio gets in touch with his line-cooking roots at this impromptu restaurant in Craft’s private dining room. Every other Tuesday night (starting Tue 14), Colicchio will prepare a tasting menu ($150–$250) in the open kitchen. 47 E 19th St between Broadway and Park Ave (212-400-6495)

    Compiled by Daniel Gritzer
