On a busy commercial block of Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, there is an excellent, authentic Mexican eatery that you should make a point of visiting. That place is not Piramide—it’s Tacos Nuevo Mexicano, just down the street. Piramide, whose tiki hut–like bar and elegant dark-wood tables make it flashier and more assimilated than that humble taqueria, does have its charms: The wine list is better than it needs to be, and our affable server deftly distinguished between the South American and other new-world selections, most checking in at well under $30. The kitchen also manages to hit a high note here and there. Take the crab-and-avocado salad: If you can overlook the oily fried tortilla bowl it comes in, you’ll appreciate the plump chunks of sweet crabmeat mingling with just-ripe cubes of avocado and shredded cilantro in a tart honey-lime dressing. But much of the menu needs work. The choose-your-filling tacos (we went with flaccid mahi-mahi in dire need of seasoning) quickly devolved into a soggy mess. Upscale outliers, like a dry-aged strip steak with chipotle mashed potatoes, hardly fared better—its tough flesh resisted the efforts of our knife, and later our teeth as we struggled to chew. We can think of better things to do with $24, starting just a few doors down.

An outrageously absurd, misguided review. I am relatively new to the neighborhood, and, after having discovered the lovely little restaurant that is Piramide, it soon became my home away from home, where I, to this day, get a number of my meals. I am an extremely picky eater, (and have even thought about becoming a food critic in the past, although there is just something lazy and oh, what's the word? unaccountable with having a profession based solely on being fed, often for free, and then simply writing my thoughts about it. Let's just say Mom would not be pleased. But I could do it, and I just might yet!) Ever since I was a kid my parents told me that I would only eat freshly cooked foods, and those of high quality ingredients, (my mom would sometimes have to make a separate dish just for me), or I wouldn't eat it. Simple as that. I would just push it to the side. One of those things that I have pushed to the side, oddly enough, is the entire restaurant of Tacos Nuevo Mexico. Tacos Nuevos was actually one of the first restaurants I tried in the neighborhood after moving here, back in October. I have not been back since. The food was just garbage. And the place was dirty to boot. I could go on and on about how bad their food was there (like how the tortillas were of the kind you'd get at the supermarket in packs of 20 for like $4, and how the chicken could not even be chewed it was so rough), but I won't. I won't because what I really want to write about, praise about, is Piramide. Piramide is grade A, gourmet Mexican cuisine. It truly is one of a kind. Perhaps it being of such high-quality has made it different from what people are used to. But to those who don't know what you're missing, what you're used to may not be as good as it gets. According to Piramide, it gets a whole lot better. Let me first start with their soups, which include a white bean soup that has a zesty broth that is one of my favorites, and also a thick and creamy tortilla soup that is pretty much a meal in its own right. And a damned fine one at that. Next up: their quesadillas. Quesadillas are very easy to screw up. They are a delicate recipe, and a lot can go wrong. But with Piramide's quesadillas, everything is right. The cheese is always melted into a perfect gooey melt, the chicken is always tender and moist, and the tortillas are flaky and warm, and after dipping a bite into some homemade sour cream or guac, you will consider ordering another plate right then and there, it's OK, I have many times. The enchiladas are plump and filling, the refried beans are never overcooked as with most other places, the homemade salsa and red and green sauces add so much flavor to every dish, even the lunch menu is noteworthy - the grilled bread is a warm and flaky delight. As far as service goes the staff here are some of the warmest and friendliest people you'd ever find in a workplace, and even if the food was somehow sub-par one day, which it never is, I'm just saying..., I just might force it down just to say hello to these friendly folks. But the only forcing going on there will be of your own doing; trying to force yourself to leave after enjoying such tasty foods and friendly conversation, but believe me that's a good thing, and if you stick around long enough, go ahead and reward yourself with the best (and I will gladly and tirelessly debate anyone who wishes to challenge me on this), the best flan in all of New York City. It is a bold statement. But as my picky palette has taught me one thing, from childhood until just months ago I was pushing aside flan along with everything I would not care to even sniff, that is until I tried Piramide's flan. Yes. I DO NOT even like flan, that's how good theirs is. That's how good they are. And they are simply everything a good gourmet restaurant should be. I'll see you there tomorrow, 'cause I'm always there...

I have eaten at both Piramide and Tacos Nuevo Mexico, and I must agree with the reviewer's perspective - a fancier decor with a wine list does not make a better product. When we ate at Piramide, the service was intrusive, the food was cold and just plainly not good - the steak was chewy when I had it as well....and frankly when I got a look at the chef I was a little concerned that he was the one cooking the food....not trying to be mean, just honest.
I'm glad that others have been able to enjoy this restaurant - I will not be back. Nuevo Mexico has much better food and much more reasonable prices

I am sorry to disappoint, but I have to agree with the above review. I wanted to like the restaurant. But, it seems to me that the owners have no prior restaurant experience. At any level. I was bothered by the "chef", who asked how my meal was and if I ordered anything else? Kidding me, I was the only table in the place. If you are the "chef" would you not know what I ordered? I really thought the prices were high compared to quality of food. I understand rents are astronomical these days. I also understand you have to charge that amount. I just ask you to produce. When I pay 9$ for a tamale, I want something special. Maybe, you should not have tamales on the menu, if you are trying to be progressive Mexican. What I think the review was saying that if you are going to serve the same ole' same ole', it better be better that the 2$ tamale down the street.

Well, I completely disagree. Sounds to me like you should be reviewing Tacos Nuevo, since the "food" is so much better than Piramides so you say. I've been to Piramide with my husband and friends and I must say the food and service was astounding. For a family of "Picky Eaters" and not big fans of "Mexican Food", Piriamide has sure opended up our appitite! As for the Wine list - Thank God for a Spanish restaurant with a delightful and intriguing wine list. Piramide is well on it way and is sure to delight your appetite at a well spent $24.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. Its seems to me you are trying to promote Tacos Nuveo Mexico. You talk about authentic mexican food. as if Taco nuvea is the answer. you compare prices , but what about quality. I ate several times at Piramide and to counter your ridiculous statements let me just say its about time Park Slope South has a real excellent mexican restaurant with good food, good service and good wine. Oh by the way what did you mean when you said that their wine list more is more better than it needs to be. are you implying that mexican restaurants should not have a good wine list or do you mean that customers should not be given the choice of a good wine list. I would never be a tony subscriber not after reading your comical review.

What a bad review. First you are putting all mexican food in the same category. it would be like saying why go get a nice hamburger at a nice restaurant when they are only $2 at mcdonalds, after all its just a hamburger. and who in this business whould ever make a comment that states "the wine list is better then it needs to be'? again, is this comment trying to say that mexican restaurants should only be low class joints? ashamed to be a tony subscriber if the food staff is going to be sub par.

uponc reading your comments it seems that you are actually doing a review of Tacos Nuveo and attempting to glorify Tacos Nuvo at the expense of Piramide. I dont believe you are doing an honest review it seems to me you are biased. Your article almost sounds that you have a personal vendetta against Piramide. So whats the story here is Tacos Mexico a better eating establishment or maybe there not but you would like it to appaear that way. It just makes me wonder why you spoke about a commerical strip in Park Slope. Mentioned Mexican food and quickly said that Taco Mexico Nuovo is a better place, without stating specifics about the 2 restaurants. i am going to go to both restaurants this week and then I'll now what the story really is. Because tasting is believing.
