Q: Where can I guest-bartend?—Sadira Kumin, East Village
A: If lingering at the bar isn’t diversion enough, get behind it at uptown Irish tavern Trinity Pub (229 E 84th St between Second and Third Aves, 212-327-4450). Show up on Thursday nights, when booze-slinging aspirants of all stripes can take over the joint. Bring in 30 pals and the three-hour-long gig, along with free drinks and half of the tip jar, is yours for the taking. Downtowners with a good handle on the jigger can head to Stay (244 E Houston St between Aves A and B, 212-982-3532), where owner Rob Koda opens the place to guest barkeeps on Thursdays from 7 to 10pm (sign up by e-mailing guestbartend@stay-nyc.com). You’ll also need to rally your friends to make it happen. Stay, like Trinity, requires a minimum head count of 30 customers—but your modest buyback power just might just make it worth their while.
