Even though she’s more than nine months pregnant, Meredith Levy, the creator of stationery brand Minnie & Emma (minnieandemma.com), is still trolling the streets of New York for inspiration. “I stop by these paper shops every single week,” she explains. A graphic designer by training and a former brand and logo consultant for companies like Chanel and Abercrombie & Fitch, Levy launched her company earlier this year. Determined to create a line of non-fussy custom correspondence cards, she bedecks her bespoke invitations and boxed cards with antique crowns and monograms crafted out of vintage wallpaper patterns.
Soho Letterpress
“Most of the printing at Minnie & Emma is done on a digital press, but when I want something letterpressed, this is the only place to go. They are meticulous and turn out the most exquisite work: They do jobs for almost every high-end company, socialite and celebrity in NYC.” 69 Greene St between Broome and Spring Sts (212-334-4356)
Kate’s Paperie
“They always have Le Pen pens, which are harder to find in the city these days. Plus, their decorative papers inspire the liners in my envelopes. 72 Spring St between Crosby and Lafayette Sts (katespaperie.com, 212-941-9816); plus more locations.
Kinokuniya Book Store
Levy heads to this Japanese bookstore for the huge selection of pens, markers and paper goods. “Japanese office supplies are much cuter and smaller than things found here, plus they have fine-point pens in colors like chocolate brown, white and hunter green.” 1073 Sixth Ave at 41st St (212-869-1700)
Paper Presentation
“This block-long store has a carefully edited selection of every conceivable color and stock of paper and envelopes. There’s also a huge scrapbooking section and tons of tools for creating anything you could think of.” 23 W 18th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (212-463-7035)
Paper Source
“They don’t have a store in NYC yet, but whenever I’m in a city that has one, I always stop by. For now, though, I shop online. They have everything from DIY kits (and online videos) to an amazing selection of hard-to-find items.” (paper-source.com)
