    Time Out New York / Issue 648 : Feb 27–Mar 4, 2008

    Designer spotlight

Brian Spaly and Andy Dunn of Bonobos

Brian Spaly and Andy Dunn of Bonobos
“We want guys to wear pants that not everyone in the world will have so we use unusual prints for our linings.” —Andy Dunn

    WHAT IT IS
Well-cut men’s corduroys ($110–$140) and superfine wool trousers ($150–$200) with a cult following.

    WHO THEY ARE
Brian Spaly and Andy Dunn, business-school roommates at Stanford, started selling pants to fellow students from the campus parking lot last spring. The reason behind their popularity? Spaly’s extremely flattering pattern for breeches. After graduating last year, Dunn moved to NYC to helm the label and Spaly moved to Chicago; he flies here on weekends to buy fabrics.

    WHAT THEY MAKE
Dudes who are tired of buying larger sizes of trousers to fit their manly quads and posteriors won’t have to shell out for costly alterations thanks to Bonobos’ athlete-friendly design. Other thoughtful details include a slightly flared silhouette to lengthen legs’ appearance and handmade waistbands that are curved to prevent bunching with a belt. Each of their handful of styles is also made in limited runs so you won’t have to worry about the Banana Republic effect. “They’re pants for the sophisticated monkey,” says Dunn.

    WHERE IT'S AT
Despite interest from Barneys, the line is available only at bonobospants.com to keep markups minimal.—Helen Yun

    INSIDER PICKS
    1. Best running spot
Per Dunn, “nobody’s out on the East Side highway.” “There’s a nice eight-mile stretch from the Brooklyn Bridge to 34th Street,” adds Spaly.

    2. Splurge
“I love Ralph Lauren’s Polo stores and Rugby stores (ralphlauren.com) for custom shirts,” says Spaly.

I honestly might as well throw out my other casual pants because all i wear now is Bonobos unless I am wearing jeans... They just fit better....

I have six pairs, no joke. Turqs, Thals, A's, G4's, congos, Plu's - all amazing! Dropping 350 for the plus's was worth every penny, they're like butter. Love that these guys are getting some press!

These pants also serve as a great introduction for the kind of guy who has a really boring wardrobe. The only problem with Bonobos is that once you get used to wearing your first pair, it's hard to go back to the rest of your closet. Everything else feels boxy.

Good to see these guys getting the spotlight. I bought the Bryan Wolff Browns and the G4s. They fit comfortably and look amazing. I'll be going back for more.

Bonobos are the best thing since sliced bread. They fit perfectly, are fun, comfortable, and are a conversation starter. I can't wait to get the Winston's to go with my G4's, Swans, Series A's, and Midnight Blues.

My husband, age 61 was given a pair of these wonderful pants last spring and he won't wear anything else now. Says they are the best fit ever and wear well.

So glad to see you guys give props to Bonobos. These are absolutely the best pants I have ever put on. They are amazingly comfortable and they look great on.

I own five pairs of these pants - they are incredible. The fabric and color combinations are truly unique. The Mint Juleps and Black Swans are my personal favorites.
