After being famously picked up by Patricia Field’s store in 1999, the T-shirt line created by former cowboy Trevor Rains and club kid Richie Rich has since evolved into a collection of sexy, funky womenswear. In addition to electric patterns and Day-Glo hues, the line constantly references NYC in its designs, such as an oversize tee bedecked with the city skyline, or the Empire State Building transformed into a print on a curve-hugging dress. Recently, the pair joined forces with beauty brand M.A.C. to create a line of lipsticks, eye shadows and Barbie-pink compacts featuring bold, shimmering shades ($11–$33 at maccosmetics.com). Since they’ve shown serious moxie by using transgender icon Amanda Lepore as a runway mainstay, we wanted to find out what ordinary items inspire the pair. So we gave them $50 and let them loose in New York’s ubiquitous drugstore.
Flintstones Complete Vitamins, $8.99
“The box is such a bright, flashy orange. And come on, you have to take your vitamins. Who doesn’t like Flintstones?” says Rich. Along with a few other deficiencies (hydration, anyone?), lack of vitamin B12 is one of the reasons you may feel less than your best after a night of drinking. Fortunately, these supplements contain 100 percent of your daily value in every piece, making them one thing worth taking under the influence.
Nailene Rhinestone Nail Art Kit, $2.99
“Glitter! Hello?” exclaims Rich. To get your nails ready for a night at downtown club APT, they recommend picking up this easy-to-use DIY kit that features 175 sparkling gems in eight shapes.
Singer safety pins, $2.59
“We really love that ’80s punk look with the safety pins,” says Rains. “We love that bad-girl edge that using them brings.” One way to evoke Ramones style is to stack four or five safety pins on top of one another on the breast pocket or sleeve of your shirt, or on the thigh of your jeans.
Greeting card, $2.99
“We have to get this,” gushes Rich. “It’s got glitter all over it, and I love the wavey edge.” Not into supporting Hallmark holidays? You can turn old greeting cards into unusual note cards by cutting off the cover and using the back for writing personal messages.
Unicorn Beanie Baby, $6.99
“It’s a unicorn, it’s purple, and it’s glittery,” explains Rich. “’Nuff said.” As mythical creatures, unicorns have historically been associated with chastity or purity. In Beanie Baby form, they make a great gift for your five-year-old or favorite virgin.
Tic Tac Bold Fruit, $.95
“This package is an awesome, fun color. And it’s self-proclaimed bold,” says Rains. Like their mint counterparts, Tic Tac’s new “bold” flavors have a strong taste and are less than two calories per piece.
Pepto-Bismol, $3.49 for 8 oz
Rich deems the shade of the nausea-relieving formula as “fab” and thinks that it matches a shade of lipstick in their M.A.C. collection. What’s more, when you’re suffering from an upset stomach, pouring a few tablespoons of PB into a martini glass will jump-start your recovery with its look alone.
Diva Da’ Bunny milk chocolate bunny, $7.49
“Oh my god, it’s a Diva Bunny,” says Rich. “And she’s got a candy necklace! Seriously though, those are great colors with the pink next to the blue and the yellow.” And while caloric, chocolate stimulates the secretion of endorphins, which produce a pleasurable sensation similar to a runner’s high.
Mr. Bubble bubble bath, $3.49
“We love using pink,” confesses Rains. “It’s fun and you can really get funky with it or just be soft and girlish. This bottle has such a fun shade and it smells like bubble gum.” Not only is Mr. Bubble hypoallergenic, but its suds are infused with aloe.
Premium Dog Chew Lollipops, $1.99
“These are really just for my dogs,” says Rich. “I have three and they’re adorable, especially when they chew on treats that look like lollipops,” he adds. And you don’t have to banish your pooch’s treats to the cupboard: Put a group of these chew toys in a short vase and you’ve got an instant touch of kitsch—just be sure to put them well out of Rover’s reach.
Ricola Honey Lemon with Echinacea drops, $2.39
Rains loves the vibrant packaging of these throat soothers. Twisting a few of the bright-yellow wrappers together would also add some flair to a humdrum ring or bracelet.
Jelly Belly Gummi Bears, $2.19
“I love the colors in this entire package,” says Rains. “They’re so bright and bold, and mixed together, it’s great,” chimes in Rich. “And they’re sugar free.” If you’re throwing a cocktail party, eschew the peanuts and place a clear bowl of these vibrant candies on your coffee table for a festive snack. (Careful: too many will cause diarrhea.)
