After 20 sessions at Bluestreak over 12 weeks, I was indisputably in better shape. I felt stronger, and the biweekly court sessions improved my overall game a lot (a fringe benefit I hadn’t really anticipated). The last part of the program was the final test. You can see the full before-and-after results online, but overall, I made great strides in strength, good progress in agility and stayed about the same in speed. And vertical leap? I gained 1.5 inches. Decent, but not nearly enough to get me over a regulation basketball hoop.
But who said anything about regulations? As the photo here proves, I did dunk. Of course, I had the gym staff lower the hoop to about eight feet, but I’m not ashamed to tie on a technicality. Next time, Elise should get a better lawyer. If I had been able to commit more time to the program and do four sessions a week, I’m certain I would have seen greater gains. Dunking is within the reach of the average thirtysomething athlete—if they’re willing to put in an extraordinary effort. Otherwise, that’s what video games are for.
