Amid recent outcries from animal-rights groups demanding that Mayor Bloomberg ban the use of carriage horses, it’s easy to forget that horse-drawn buggies raced each other for sport down Third Avenue in the early 1800s. These popular, ad hoc equine competitions were later formalized at the New York Trotting Club, which began in 1825. Today, the NYTC’s legacy can be seen at the Meadowlands with the Breeders Crown series, and also in the Idiotarod—a now-annual Brooklyn event at which five-person teams of becostumed thrill-seekers race each other down city thoroughfares in shopping carts.
