Thursday 15
Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz WBGO-FM 88.3 (6:30–7:30pm). In 1998, legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson stopped by for a chat and to perform with Marian McPartland; today, McPartland presents an encore of that classic hour. Tune in and pay tribute to the late, great Peterson (who passed away in 2007).
Friday 16
Neil Diamond Radio Sirius Satellite Radio ch 3 (throughout the day). In the tradition of artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin, Sirius has awarded Neil Diamond with his very own channel. Coinciding with the release of his new Rick Rubin–produced album, Home Before Dark, the channel features exclusive programming, including stories from the man himself. Sadly, today is the last day to hear it—so you have 24 hours in which you just might catch some reminiscing about The Jazz Singer. Need we say more?
Saturday 17
Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen WNYC-FM 93.9 (10–11am). Pajama-loving painter-director Julian Schnabel visits with Kurt Andersen today. The topic is “creativity against all odds,” aand the Schnab will discuss his recent film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on the memoirs of French Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby—who dictated his book via a series of blinks after being paralyzed. Andersen also looks at the life of famously reclusive (or possibly agoraphobic) poet Emily Dickinson, and how her limitations influenced her work.
Sunday 18
Spinning on Air WNYC-FM 93.9 (7–8pm). You may not have heard of Brooklyn’s Grey Reverend—a.k.a. singer-songwriter L.D. Brown—but his star is rising: He’s opened for the Cinematic Orchestra, and even sat in with the band on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Catch him while he’s still underground on today’s Spinning.
Monday 19
Liz Berg’s Show WFMU-FM 91.1 (9am–noon). According to Wikipedia, Brazilian band Bonde do Role’s moniker translates to “joyride trolley.” It’s a fitting description for the band’s funky, fun music as well. Switch the dial to WFMU and prepare to shake your booty—they’re performing live today.
Artist Confidential XM Satellite Radio ch 2 (throughout the day). The members of Asia, original style—Geoff Downes, John Wetton, Steve Howe and Carl Palmer—reunited in 2006, and earlier this year released Phoenix, the first album to feature all four since 1983’s Alpha. If your only exposure to the band is “Heat of the Moment,” tune in today to hear all that the prog veterans have to offer.
Tuesday 20
Unmasked XM Satellite Radio ch 153 (5pm). We’re not sure that Margaret Cho ever really needs to be “unmasked,” so to speak; she’s pretty open about her life, politics and comedy as is. But we’ll always tune in to hear more. The comedian recorded an episode for Unmasked’s new season, which you can hear tonight.
Wednesday 21
Words and Music from Studio A WFUV-FM 90.7 (9–10pm). Country-music maven Kathy Mattea stops by to talk tonight about her new album, Coal, which was heavily influenced by her West Virginia mining-town background.
