Instead of the niche perspective on NYC’s past that some of our favorite New York attractions offer, the New-York Historical Society gives a comprehensive look at the Big Apple of yesteryear, with wide-ranging exhibits covering all aspects of city life. The museum’s permanent holdings—many of which are on view in its fourth-floor open-storage galleries—offer a glimpse into quotidian urban living, with items such as vintage toys, furniture and clothing. A massive renovation, completed in 2011, made exhibits more compelling and interactive, helping visitors gain a clearer, deeper understanding of the city. Tip: See even more artifacts from the museum’s collection at Caffé Storico, the on-site Italian restaurant opened by Buddakan and Morimoto's Stephen Starr.
