Like a starlet with beauty but no talent, this refined tavern offers lots of flash (see the requisite old-timey trappings) and little substance. Beer is the drink of choice, but the 16 drafts are mostly static, with warhorses (Blue Moon) trotted out alongside treats (Belhaven’s gently hopped Thistle IPA). The wine selection, meanwhile, is sparse, with just a handful of offerings that read better than they taste. Ditto the food: The haddock in the fish-and-chips was the picture of golden-fried perfection, but quickly disintegrated into greasy lumps. In pub grub as in pubs, looks can be deceiving.
