Know your bartender
The talent: Karin Stanley
Where to find her: Mondays and Saturdays at Little Branch (20 Seventh Ave South at Leroy St, 212-929-4360); Fridays at Dutch Kills (27-24 Jackson Ave at Dutch Kills St, Long Island City, Queens; 718-383-2724, dutchkillsbar.com). She takes occasional shifts at Milk and Honey, too.
Why you'll dig her: She's a lifer. Stanley got her start working at a tiny, packed Ontario bar on Christmas Day in 1998 (she was 17) and never looked back. By 2008 she was mixing drinks in New York City for Sasha Petraske. She's brought both grit (taming rowdy patrons) and levity (ask her about her cat) to some of the most vaunted bars in town, all while executing flawless classics and thoughtful off-the-cuff creations. Stanley is as swift, knowledgeable and obliging as any bartender, but she's also social, goofy and a little salty—an electric combo that makes her one of our favorites in town.
She says: "I love when people ask for a bartender's choice. It's very rewarding when someone says, 'Wow, I've never had anything like this.' Being open is the way to my heart."
