Marie's Crisis
When everyone chimes in on standards and entire musical scores, this place feels straight out of Sally Bowles's Weimar Berlin. Every piano player is great; we especially admire the legendary Dexter Watson, who has been at Marie's since the beginning of time and has the wide-ranging knowledge to prove it. 59 Grove St at Seventh Ave (no phone). Daily 4pm--4am.

The Monster
Any night of the week, you can find singers of varying quality gathered around the grand piano upstairs. The musicians take requests, mostly jazz and American standards, and there's a traditional dance club that opens downstairs at 10pm (5:30pm on Sundays). 80 Grove St at Washington Pl (212-924-3557, Mon--Fri 4pm--4am, Sat--Sun 2pm--4am; $4--$8.

The Townhouse
The front room of this East Side gentlemen's club may be more subdued than most libraries, but the show-tune sing-alongs that erupt at the piano bar in back are anything but. 236 E 58th St between Second and Third Aves (212-754-4649, Mon--Thu 6pm--2am, Fri 6pm--3:30am, Sat 4pm--4am, Sun 7pm--1:30am.Steven Thrasher
