Park Slope bar crawl
Go on a suds-fueled tour of the Slope.
Tue Feb 14 2012
Start: 321 Fifth Ave at 3rd St, Park Slope, Brooklyn
End: 474 Bergen St at Flatbush Ave, Park Slope, Brooklyn
Time: 4.5 hours
Distance: 1.7 miles
1
Start at the Gate (321 Fifth Ave at 3rd St, 718-768-4329), a cozy bar that opened in 1997 and serves as a hub for the nabe's craft-beer zealots (as well as their dogs). Keep an eye out for freshly tapped rarities from the bar's frequent brewery nights: Speakeasy's Double Daddy ($6), a malty double IPA, was one such recent find, though less-boozy standbys like Guinness ($6) and Old Speckled Hen ($6) might leave you in better shape for the journey ahead.
2
Stroll through the spacious outdoor courtyard of Mission Dolores (249 Fourth Ave between Carroll and President Sts; 718-399-0099, missiondoloresbar.com) to find its dimly lit enclosed bar in the back, where you can camp out and play pinball when it's chilly. The bar, equipped with 20 taps and a cask, stocks plenty of adventurous brews like the Cuvee De Jacobins Rouge (12oz pour $8), a Flemish red ale that packs a sour punch.
3
Littleneck (288 Third Ave between Carroll and President Sts, Gowanus, Brooklyn; 718-522-1921, littleneckbrooklyn.com), a New England--style seafood spot near the Gowanus, is outfitted like a fishing shack, with walls adorned with driftwood and nautical ropes. Order like an old-school quahogger and get a can of silky Narragansett porter ($4) to go with some raw oysters ($2 for East Coast, $3 for West).
4
Head back across Fourth Ave and pump a few dollar bills into the indie-rock-centric jukebox at the Sackett (661 Sackett St between Fourth and Fifth Aves; 718-622-0437, thesackett.com). Three-buck cans of Genny Cream Ale might seem tempting, but if you want to keep your standards high, opt for a satisfying glass of Greenpoint Harbor Red Ale ($6), a Chinook-hops-heavy red ale.
5
Make a pit stop at brew emporium Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave between Berkeley Pl and Union St; 718-230-7600, bierkraft.com), where coolers of craft bottles line the entryway. After perusing the wares, gather around one of the picnic tables to enjoy your selection—maybe a bottle of sessionable Stone Levitation ($3.25), or a draft pour from the store's rotating lineup of kegs.
6
Gather your strength for the walk back to Fourth Avenue and head into Pacific Standard (82 Fourth Ave between Bergen St and St. Marks Pl; 718-858-1951), which matches its decor—the walls plastered with UC Berkeley swag—with West Coast--centric tap lines. It'd be rude not to order a Cali staple like the dank Green Flash West Coast IPA ($6), or a refreshing Anchor Liberty Ale ($6).
7
Almost there! Keep it moving to Fourth Avenue Pub (76 Fourth Ave between Bergen St and St. Marks Pl; 718-643-2273), a Park Slope stalwart with top-notch suds pouring from 27 taps and a cask. Grab a booth and a basket of gratis popcorn while you sip a malty pint of Founders Porter ($6).
8
Congrats, you made it to the final stop of the crawl! If you're still standing, reward yourself with a meaty dinner from Bark Hot Dogs (474 Bergen St at Flatbush Ave, 718-789-1939). We recommend getting one of their signature pork-and-beef franks, and cap off the boozing with a Bark Red Ale (12oz pour $4), a highly drinkable house brew crafted for the shop by Sixpoint. At this point, 12 ounces will be plenty.
