Sensational Sangria

Q:

Where can I find great sangria?— Upper West Side

A:

The fruity wine-based refreshment, typically associated with the Spanish, has been adopted as one of Gothamites’ unofficial summer quaffs. Havana Central at the West End(2909 Broadway between 113th and 114th Sts, 212-662-8830) serves a selection of the tasty vino-and-fresh-fruit concoction, all garnished with an appropriately festive plastic hula girl. In addition to the classic red and white varieties, guzzlers can choose from champagne, rosé, shiraz or port-infused versions. Glasses are $8–$9 a pop, or sample a flight of four for $18. Inwood’s 809 Sangria Bar & Grill(112 Dyckman St between Nagle and Post Aves, 212-304-3800) features six inspired selections ($15–$35 per pitcher) like the 809 Passion, a blend of Alizé cognac, merlot, brandy and passion-fruit nectar. Or visit the bar at Suba(109 Ludlow St between Delancey and Rivington Sts, 212-982-5714) where any of the six sangrias—say, an iced tea version made with Darjeeling, lemon and Andalusian wine—can be yours for $33–$35 a pitcher. Salud!
