Happy birthday to Veselka (again)—this time with free food, wine and beer

Remember Veselka's first 60th birthday, when prices dropped back to 1954? (Hello, $1.50 pirogis!) On Monday, the East Village hallmark will be picking up the check entirely, offering free hors d’oeuvres, and all the beer, wine, and lemonade you can drink from 6–11pm. Expect eats like mini Ukrainian meatballs, bite-size kielbasa sandwiches and assorted Eastern-European sweets like cheese blintzes.

Be sure to get to the party early—there's only room for 150 guests at a time—and bring a party hat. No really, they're encouraging birthday garb. If you can’t make it on Monday, you'll have to hit the 24-hour diner another time for its rich beef stroganoff ($18), veal goulash ($18.50) and grilled Ukrainian kielbasa ($17.50). Good luck in line, folks!
