The date: Wine and chocolate at Pierre Loti Union Square (53 Irving Place at 17th Street)

First impression
James: “She was a little shy, and I noticed that she’s tall, which I am too. After she got over the shyness, she was pretty friendly and outgoing.”
Mary: “He was really nice, well-dressed and easy to talk to. He seemed very open from the start, and I felt at ease. His eyes were really nice too.”

Chemistry
James: “We touched on the basics: where we’re from, what we do—that type of stuff. She’s well-grounded and competitive—I liked that. She plays basketball and likes to shoot from outside.”
Mary: “We had friendship-like chemistry. There was no flirtation
or instant connection, but I was okay with that. We talked about where we’re from, our hobbies, food and sports—
a really good conversation.”

Dating advice for one another
James: “I’m no dating guru, but she could open up a little faster. I carried the conversation in the beginning of the date."
Mary: “None. He was really open and easygoing, and I appreciated that.”

Afterward
James: “We walked back to the subway, and I got her number. She’s probably not someone I would date, but we could possibly be friends.”
Mary: “We walked to Union Square and hugged goodbye.
He asked for my number, so I gave it to him. I’d hang out as friends but nothing more.”

In three words
James: Mary is "competitive, career-driven and intelligent."
Mary: James is "friendly, easygoing and funny."

Verdict
James: “No chemistry. Some of the girls I’ve met who are born and raised New Yorkers aren’t really my type—I’m from Wisconsin. I’m sure some of my guy friends would want to date her.”
Mary: “It was great to meet someone put-together and outgoing, but there was no strong chemistry. He’d make
a great guy for someone, just not me.”
