NYC beaches, pools and parks may get free sunscreen dispensers soon

As it gets hotter and muggier in our lovely city, people become less excited about going outside and more excited about air conditioning. But a new proposal from city controller Scott Stringer may be able to help convince you to venture outdoors—his plan would provide the city’s beaches, pools and parks with free sunscreen dispensers. Now that all the outdoor pools are open, this is good news for us (and our skin).

There’s no shortage of things to do outside in New York, and even if you only dare go into the sun to get to outdoor bars, you still need to protect your flesh. Stringer suggests installing dispensers with at least SPF 30, which blocks 97 percent of UVB rays and will protect you from turning into a lobster.

It’s a much better proposal than some of the ideas for the L Train, that’s for sure. Also, Boston and Miami already have the program in full swing, and New York should never have to play catch-up to them.
