The Big Apple Circus is closing its tent for good

The circus is leaving town. After 38 years, the Big Apple Circus announced yesterday that it will not be performing anymore. Its latest show, the Grand Tour, ended in January, and since then the acrobats and jugglers have fallen on hard times. Last month, the one-ring circus had a fundraiser to attempt to earn $2 million to stay afloat. (Yes, even clowns were victim to the economy crash.)

Since the circus is actually a nonprofit, it relies on private events and donations to exist, but the latest fundraiser only drew in $900,000. That means the tent is closing, and instead, it will use the money on its community service programs like Clown Care, where clowns visit children in hospitals.

The Big Apple Circus was always one of the most humane when it came to animals, featuring dogs, horses and camels instead of tigers and elephants, and there are many other reasons to love it, like its clowns that are actually funny, not creepy. They’re going to have to be sad tramp clowns now that they’re out of a job.
