Ice-cream sandwiches have taken on many guises in the past few years, with scoops crammed between macarons, black-and-white cookies and fresh-pressed waffles. But our favorite—and most artery-testing—of the bunch is no doubt the doughnut ice cream sandwich. Bookended with sweets from some of the city's top fried-dough purveyors, here are four gleefully gluttonous ice-cream sandwiches to cool you down this summer.

The latest addition to the sugar-bomb crew is a PB&J-inspired creation from the NYC ice-pop operation, who launched the $7 treat this weekend at Rockaway's Beach 97th Street concessions. Two fried doughnut halves are smeared with peanut butter and jelly, then loaded with a fat sphere of strawberry ice cream, and finished with even more PB&J and a dusting of powdered sugar.

The Midtown West shop offers build-your-own doughnut ice-cream sandwiches, with a dizzying array of options. Scoop flavors include stuff like Guatemalan espresso, oatmeal-raisin cookie and caramel-pretzel, while the doughnuts are gonzo, hand-dipped beasts: Strawberry icing with Fruit Loops, vanilla frosted with gummy bears and a s'mores number with marshmallow drizzle.

At the Greenpoint doughnuttery, you can have any of the shop's acclaimed cake-style doughnuts filled with a giant scoop of Haagen Daaz—possible combinations include a red-velvet round with vanilla or a chocolate cake with cookies-and-cream.

The doughnut truck launched the FroDo last year: It's a fresh-from-the-fryer apple-cider doughnut hand-packed with heaps of vanilla Blue Marble ice cream. Check out Twitter for the truck's daily location.
