In The End of Alice, journalist and novelist A.M. Homes portrayed the child molester as a sympathetic figure; in Music for Torching, she painted the nuclear suburban family in bold strokes of sex and violence. Her latest, May We Be Forgiven, provides its own sort of domestic provocation: It’s the story of George Silver and his brother Harry, who must take care of George’s kids when George angrily crashes his car into another.
