Mathis's The Twelve Tribes of Hattie is an Oprah-approved novel of the Great Migration, as viewed through the eyes of protagonist Hattie Shepherd and her children. Harding's Pulitzer winner, Tinkers, delivers the sort of patient, elegant prose one might expect from a writer who grew up in rural Massachusetts and Maine.
