New York City Opera is gone and the Met's in debt, but HERE and Beth Morrison Projects prove that thrilling opera continues to bloom. This year's lineup includes The Scarlet Ibis, a puppet-augmented tale of family and nature by composer Stefan Weisman and Time Out New York theater editor David Cote; the immersive, multimedia Sunken Cathedral by Korean-American "sonic surrealist" Bora Yoon; Todd Almond's Kansas City Choir Boy, featuring rocker Courtney Love; Paola Prestini's Aging Magician; a gothic all-female choir from Slovenia; and much more.
