The Coney Island Reggae Sound System Beach Party

Reggae is one of the reigning sounds of summer, and Coney Island is the archetypal New York City beach—making this Sunday shindig a magical musical experience. Held monthly on the boardwalk, the parties feature such Jamaican-music notables as Clive Chin, Downbeat the Ruler, Johnny Osbourne and Carlton Livingstone. • (soundliberation.org).

Tiki Disco

If Coney Island is the ne plus ultra of Gotham shorelines, Rockaway Beach is considered a close second. Every two weeks, this rabble-rousing crew decamps from the hipster-friendly backyard of Roberta’s pizza palace in Bushwick to Ripper’s for an open-air party overlooking the Boardwalk. The setting might be a bit grander, but you’ll still enjoy good ol’ Tiki-style, booze-fueled frolicking, with resident spinners Eli Escobar, Lloydski and Andy Pry rocking the 4/4 rhythms. • (tikidisco.tumblr.com).
- Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk Boardwalk, between Beach 9th and Beach 149th Sts
- Sunday, August 5, 2012 2–10pm.
Made Event: John Digweed + Danny Tenaglia
- Price band: 3/4
- Critics choice
Hey, how about that whole electronic-dance-music-going-big-time thing? But superstar EDM DJs have been around for eons, and two of the best of the old-timers are England’s John Digweed and NYC’s own Danny Tenaglia, who will be spinning together at this midsummer shindig on Governors Island. A gorgeous view of Manhattan and a stretch of sand add to the allure. • (madeevent.com). $45.
- Governors Beach Club Governors Island
- Saturday August 11, 2012 4pm–midnight.
Identity Festival
- Price band: 2/4
- Critics choice
We’ve always thought that partying while staring at some faraway stage was a bit weird; dance music is designed to be a communal experience, not rock-star-style idol worship. Still, if you’re after a day of club music as theatrical production, try this fest, where a beautiful bay serves as the backdrop. This year’s edition includes a far-flung array of sounds, ranging from the booming house thumps of Sweden’s Eric Prydz to the psych-hop rhythms of West Coast beat merchant the Gaslamp Killer. • (idfestival.com). $65–$140.
- Nikon at Jones Beach Theater Jones Beach

Seaport Soul Series
- Critics choice
- Free
Sure, hanging out waterside on the East River might not be quite the same as lounging on some exotic Euro riviera, but the music might be even better than you’ll get in Cannes or Rimini: This year, ¡Wepa!’s Joann Jimenez and longtime New York nightlife figure the REDness present such spinners as Antonio Ocasio, Soulgasm’s Brian Coxx, Kiss FM’s Ruben Toro and Release’s DJ Disciple serving up house, disco, Latin rhythms and more. Visit seaportsoulseries.com for more information.
- South Street Seaport, Pier 16 Fulton St, at South St
- Tuesday July 17, 2012 - Tuesday July 31, 2012; Tue, Thu 6–11pm, Sun 3–8pm
