Good news—after far too long an absence from our fair city, London’s Richard Sen is returning to the Cielo decks. The man, probably best known under his Padded Cell moniker, makes and plays a chugging, chunky, slightly dark sort of sound, and has just compiled a collection of early U.K. house (much of it acidic in nature—bleeps and blips abound) for the Strut label called This Ain’t Chicago; the party he’s playing, coming up on Friday, June 29 and featuring a set from Disques Sinthomme’s Dennis Kane, celebrates that album’s release. To warm you up, here’s a mix of tracks off the comp—which, by the way, is excellent, especially if you have any interest in dance music’s rich history—from Sen himself, featuring often-otherworldly cuts from Julian Jonah, A Guy Called Gerald, Rio Rhythm Band and Baby Ford, among others.
Richard Sen + Dennis Kane: This Ain't Chicago Release Party is at Cielo on Friday, July 29.
