Nightlife guide: Gowanus and Park Slope

The 'hoods' five best places to party.

Slavic Soul Party!

Slavic Soul Party!

Barbs
In the cramped but friendly back room at this South Slope spot, catch French, Colombian, Brazilian and other seriously diverse music. Stop by to hear Slavic Soul Party! (Tuesday 9:30pm; $10), the coolest Eastern European dance band in town, who specialize in making you move. 376 9th St at Sixth Ave, Park Slope, Brooklyn (347-422-0248, barbesbrooklyn.com)

The Bell House
The nabe's most notable music destination boasts two spaces for getting down: the front lounge, which throws free bashes like the indie-pop-, electrodisco-leaning Happy House night (Fourth Friday of every month 10pm; free); and the venue proper, where the pop-culture-obsessed dress up for '80s- and '90s-themed bashes. Also, the beer selection here (Smutty Nose, Anchor Steam) is pretty ace. 149 7th St between Second and Third Aves, Gowanus, Brooklyn (718-643-6510, thebellhouseny.com)

Littlefield
The booking at this no-frills, eco-friendly space, which runs on wind-power energy, runs the gamut (comedy and jazz shows, a This American Life taping). So do the parties, in which everything from a steampunk-themed bash to a beat-box tourney to a dance party manned by the likes of the Hood Internet is fair game. 622 DeGraw St between Third and Fourth Aves, Gowanus, Brooklyn (718-855-3388, littlefieldnyc.com)

Southpaw
Step into this spacious music venue for fun monthly parties. Try Dig Deeper (every fourth Saturday of the month 10pm; $15, advance $10), where you can shake it to '60s soul dusties picked by Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky, and then a live set by a typically impressive vet, such as the recent bash with singer Syl Johnson. 125 Fifth Ave between St. Johns and Sterling Pls, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-230-0236, spsounds.com)

Ultraviolet
This new, appropriately named spot (each of its three floors is drenched in, yes, violet lighting) is a sleek addition to the industrial-heavy nabe. Those craving Latin, salsa, Brazilian and otherworldly beats should make their way to the brand-new monthly shindig Caliente! Gowanus (third Thursday of every month 9pm; free), when Turntables on the Hudson star DJ Nappy G mans the decks. 424A Third Ave at 7th St, Gowanus, Brooklyn (718-596-6627, ultraviolet-brooklyn.com)
