Dig Deeper: Spyder Turner

Dusty-fingered record freaks Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky are back with their night devoted to vintage funk and soul. For this month’s edition, they're bringing in one of the powerhouse voices of Detroit soul, Spyder Turner. Though he achieved major-label success (his version of "Stand by Me" is one of the best), Turner's earlier singles, on local imprints like Cha-Tok and Good Time, are fantastic—and it's that material he'll be focusing on tonight. He'll be backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band, which will also play an early set.
