Funny waiters and housewives to brawl for cash
The New York's Funniest Professional contest seeks employees from all walks of life
Thu Apr 24 2014
For anyone who has ever been told, "Hey, you're pretty funny for a [insert your profession here]," or have had coworkers announce, "You should be on a sitcom," there's a new contest from Gotham Comedy Club and the Manhattan Comedy School that might be up your alley.
The New York's Funniest Professional competition, which will be held over the course of the next three months at Gotham, asks funny people from ten different fields—advertising, food service, acting, law, teaching, real estate, sales, trade, journalism and housewifery/househusbandry—to compete for a $1,000 prize to be given away at the finals on July 15. (The early rounds will pit 12 comics from each profession against one another.)
Pretty fun idea, though there is one catch: It's a bringer show, meaning each hopeful has to get 15 people in the door for each show they participate in. (And each of those people will have to pay $12 plus a two-drink minimum.) If that doesn't faze you—that is, you have friends and they have cash—the application is here and the submission deadline is May 4.
