One of the best bands and one of the best callers in the Northeast. This dance is going to ROCK. And it's FREE!! If anyone has ever told you, "You should try Contra Dancing," this is your absolute best opportunity to do it! I promise, no one will laugh at you if you've never danced before, or if you consider yourself a complete klutz - contra's not like that. It's pretty easy to learn, and everyone is friendly. If you have danced before, once you get the hang of it, incorporating moves from Blues or Swing is really fun. It's also a great way to meet interesting people and make friends. If you like trad, or folk, or Celtic music, you will have an awesome time.

Contra dancing, which is not very well known in NYC, is an old form of New England based American folk dance which is experiencing a huge renaissance in other parts of the country. Anyone of any age can contra dance, and at festivals it's quite common to see dancers ranging in age from ten to eighty. This free contra dance, a gift to the city of New York on behalf of Country Dance New York and Country Dance and Song Society, is geared towards beginners. All steps and figures will be taught by master caller Will Mentor, and the dancing will be accompanied by Nor'easter from Boston. Members of the dance community will be on hand to partner up with the inexperienced dancers to make sure they have fun while they learn. Anyone who attends the afternoon dance will receive a coupon good for five dollars off the admission price to the dance that evening. Come join our wonderful community and share the joy of contra! The contra dances that are held on Saturday nights can best be described ad "fun" This is an amazing time to find out how much "fun" it can be for free. If you have ever felt bluegrass, or folk music or " world music" just make you want to move try this. The experience of having the music tell a whole room full of people when to swing, stomp their feet or just spin is something you don't know what you are missing. This saturday at 4 PM it is free and a great chance to learn
