Dance, but especially ballet, has a new stage on Instagram. This week, check out snapshots from the former New York City Ballet principal.

Some people shop online to relax. I troll Instagram for dancers. What's with the loony allure of ballet and Instagram? Of course, dance is a visual art form; there's the fly-on-a-wall enticement of seeing dancers in their dressing rooms, rehearsal studios and on tour. But something else is at play: the hilarious contrast of a dancer striving for perfection onstage and showing a wicked sense of humor off.
One Instagrammer with a special eye for the absurd is Sébastien Marcovici, who recently retired from New York City Ballet along with his wife, Janie Taylor. As he makes the transition from a professional dancer to ballet master of Benjamin Millepied's L.A. Dance Project, he shoots and shoots and shoots—under the name of @tear27. This past weekend, he shared pictures from Paris: ravishing street art; a page of hastily scribbled stage directions (which prompted Millepied to reply, "Ravel's fault not mine"); three mouse-costumed girls at the Paris Opera ("Petits Rats de l'Opéra!"); and a countdown of the days, hours, minutes and seconds since his NYCB retirement show with Taylor (39 days, eight hours, zero minutes and one second). Taylor has her own fascinating Instagram account, but she is also Marcovici's muse: Don't miss the video of her eating a plate of her own hair like spaghetti. Fantastic.
