While today's hipster haunts may adhere to an old-timey, repurposed-wood template, Rye stands apart from its vintage brethren thanks to chef Cal Elliott's contemporary-American bistro eats. He balances marvelously messy bar food—like the glazed-meatloaf sandwich, a half-pound headstone of veal, duck, short rib and pork cooked in braising juices—and sophisticated fare such as a smoky sturgeon salad and duck breast anointed with curry-spiked butter.
