While today's hipster haunts may adhere to an old-timey, repurposed-wood template, Rye stands apart from its vintage brethren thanks to chef Cal Elliott's contemporary-American bistro eats. He balances marvelously messy bar food—like the glazed-meatloaf sandwich, a half-pound headstone of veal, duck, short rib and pork cooked in braising juices—and sophisticated fare such as a smoky sturgeon salad and duck breast anointed with curry-spiked butter. As you'd expect, there are mustachioed bartenders serving Prohibition-era cocktails—and they're pretty great, too. Rye 247 South 1st St between Havemeyer and Roebling Sts, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-218-8047)
