Restaurant chains used to signal the absence of food cred. But lately, spin-offs have been trumping even the restaurants that spawned them. According to you, Zak Pelaccio's new Upper West Side Fatty Crab was last year's most impressive new sequel. The offshoot, as bright and spacious as the downtown original is dingy and cramped, featured an expanded menu and flavors that—like the dining room—were somehow bigger and more vibrant. And so it was that you wound up falling for the younger sibling—due in large part to the aioli-slathered Fatty Dog, whole fish with chili-lime sauce and the Pelaccio riff on a classic banh mi that are only available here. Fatty Crab 2170 Broadway between 76th and 77th Sts (212-496-2722)
