Best new sandwich shop: Defonte's of Brooklyn

  • Photographs: Roxana Marroquin

OTHER NOMINEES Mile End, Saltie, Xie Xie (CLOSED)

In a time when unconventional sandwiches like banh mi are all the rage, an old timer ended up stealing your hearts. Defonte's has been making overstuffed heros in Brooklyn for decades, but with its new satellite branch in Gramercy, office workers are joining the fan ranks. The massive, roly-poly sandwiches come on fluffy white lengths of bread, jammed full of stuffings like heaping scoops of egg, potato and cheese, and sliced roasted pork with spicy vegetables, fried eggplant and swiss cheese. The best New York originals never fade. Defonte's of Brooklyn 261 Third Ave at 21st St (212-614-1500)
