The Southern food takeover surged ahead this year, with pimento cheese and pulled pork popping up at restaurants across the city. But NYC's reigning queens of Dixieland grub—Sarah Buck, Carolyn Bane and Erika Geldzahler—toppled the competition when they reopened their beloved fried-chicken temple, Pies 'n' Thighs. Fans bided their time during a two-year hiatus, as the Williamsburg trio upgraded their down-home operation from a barroom stall to a sit-down eatery. And when they finally unfolded the new joint's gingham tablecloths, they didn't disappoint. The juicy, golden-fried fowl alone is worth the wait, while baked goods—fluffy biscuits; homey pies, like a rich banana cream topped with Nilla Wafers—are as fine as you'll taste in any urbanite honky-tonk in town. 166 South 4th St at Driggs Ave, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (347-529-6090, piesnthighs.com)
