Alison Nelson, founder of cacao sanctuary the Chocolate Bar, expanded her repertoire when this West Village storefront opened in early October. Avoiding the pastel-painted frilliness found in many American bakeries, Nelson, who hails from a military family, gave her new spot a serviceman theme. She named it in honor of the statue in nearby Abingdon Square Park of a doughboy (World War I slang for an American troop), and decorated it with antique photos of soldiers. The down-home treats would be welcome in any care package, whether destined for an overseas officer or a friend down the street. Find comforting goodies like corn muffins ($2.25), peanut-butter-and-jelly cupcakes ($4) and white-chocolate-chip oatmeal cookies ($2.75). And don't miss her ultrafudgy brownies ($3.50), a beloved staple at her first shop. 535 Hudson St at Charles St (212-206-8135)
