City Hall and Battery Park City
Lower Manhattan's working corridor may yet shake its reputation as a culinary no-man's-land. A Shake Shack outpost and another Danny Meyer project are slated for next year, but for now an influx of new open-air food stalls is powering the lunch-hour renaissance. Down along the Battery Park City waterfront, FiDi workers can sneak in some sun while hitting up stands like Ed's Lobster Bar and Fatty Snack. Carnivores should train their focus on the latter, which takes its cues from Zak Pelaccio's Malaysian-inspired BBQ joint in Brooklyn. Tender heritage pork ribs ($12)—fat-stippled behemoths rubbed down with Indonesian long pepper—are smoked for eight hours, then finished on a hardwood-charcoal grill and slicked with a salty-sweet blend of fish sauce and palm sugar. Farther north, new tenants are reinvigorating the kiosks outside City Hall, led by Taqueria Nixtamalito—the first Manhattan location of the pedigreed Queens tortilla maker Tortilleria Nixtamal. While the barbacoa ($2.75) and adobe-marinated al pastor ($2.50) tacos are already welcome exceptions in the Mexican-food wasteland below Canal Street, the chipotle tamales ($3.50)—stuffed with a spicy mix of shredded chicken and pork—are the best showcase of Nixtamal's house-made masa. Other fresh faces in the mix include Centre Melts, a snack stand serving Mud Coffee and grilled cheese sandwiches. Fatty Snack, World Financial Center Plaza, Battery Park City (fatty-snack.com). Daily 11am--7pm. * Taqueria Nixmatalito, Centre St at Brooklyn Bridge Promenade (tortillerianixtamal.com). Daily 11am--7pm.
