Cruzan Estate Single Barrel
1. Cruzan Estate Single Barrel
$29.99 for 750ml at Astor Wines & Spirits (399 Lafayette St at 4th St, 212-674-7500)
The sweetest of the bunch, this blended rum from St. Croix has components aged for as long as 12 years. Between the pronounced caramel aromas and warm nuttiness, the combined effect is something like pecan pie in a glass.
2. Ron Zacapa Centenario 23
$39.99 for 750ml at Astor Wines & Spirits
A blend of 6- to 23-year-old rums that have been aged in both bourbon and sherry casks, this profound Guatemalan spirit smells of orange rind and spices like clove and cinnamon, and is rounded out by a mellow sweetness.
3. Flor de Caa Grand Reserve 7 Year Old
$23.99 for 750ml at Beacon Wines & Spirits (2120 Broadway at 74th St, 212-877-0028)
The molasses and oak notes in this Nicaraguan rum are undercut slightly by the scent of alcohol, but for the price, it’s an impressively complex product.
4. Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star 8 Year Old
$22.99 for 750ml at Astor Wines & Spirits
Less sweet than some of these other rums, Haiti’s Barbancourt is leaner and peppery, with a yellow spice quality suggestive of saffron.
5. Depaz Blue Cane Rhum Agricole
$34.99 for one liter at Astor Wines & Spirits
Distilled from pure sugarcane juice instead of molasses, this spirit from Martinique doesn’t have the nutty, caramel flavors often associated with rum. Instead, expect a tequila-like smokiness.
