One of the advantages of drinking in hotels is that they’re often big enough to house multiple bars, allowing customers to choose among them. The Standard Hotel, Andr Balazs’s glass-and-steel tower that lords over the Highline, is one of the best examples of the in-hotel advantage. Depending on one’s mood, there’s the bright, whitewashed bar at the Standard Grill restaurant, where vested barkeeps mix cocktails and pour wines by the glass, while a cook hand-slices cured meats for snacking. Then there’s the outdoor biergarten, which in warmer months pours steins like the refreshing Ayinger Bru-Weisse wheat beer ($7), served alongside sausages and pretzels ($7 each) from Austrian chef Kurt Gutenbrunner. The exclusive 18th floor, meanwhile, boasts 360-degree views of the city, as well as two outdoor terraces (your best bet for getting up there is to arrive before 9pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays, when the door policy is less strict). For a more relaxed vibe, settle into one of the round-backed chairs in the ground floor’s Living Room lounge, a modern space with giant globe lanterns and a glass wall that looks onto a patio outside. It’s a calm spot for drinks and a limited menu, all delivered from the adjacent Standard Grill. We enjoyed the Gin Fix ($12)—a lively blend of the aromatic spirit with bittersweet blood-orange juice—and the Rickshaw ($12), which balances sweet bourbon with spicy ginger beer. They both made for an agreeable prelude to bites like a juicy cheeseburger with thin, crackly fries ($14). With all this squeezed into one space, you may never need to venture to another Meatpacking District hot spot again.
