Description
Morgan Freeman coasts mellowly through his volatile role as an alcoholic thespian in Mike Nichols’s oomphless revival of Clifford Odets’s 1950 play, and the astringent Frances McDormand seems miscast as his possibly unstable wife. Of the principal cast, only Peter Gallagher—playing a stage director willing to give Freeman’s character another shot—gives credible punch to Odets’s on-the-nose dialogue, but his efforts can’t jolt the evening out of its lethargy. In Nichols’s account of this talky backstage drama, there’s not much life in the wings; the play flaps and flaps, but doesn’t take flight.—AF
