Description
The Roundabout Theatre Company has had a half-excellent season (Sunday in the Park with George, The Overwhelming, and others). But its revival of Christopher Hampton’s 1987 adaptation of a 1782 French epistolary novel sadly exemplifies the nonprofit giant’s weaknesses: lame direction and ill-conceived celebrity casting. Laura Linney, a luminous and likable performer, is woefully miscast as scheming superbitch Marquise de Merteuil. Ben Daniel’s Valmont is more vigorous, but too obviously sleazy. Rufus Norris’s chilly, chic but vapid staging drags along with too few titillations or laughs.—DC
